“Home: Lesson One” revealed how the idea of home was being reshaped by the current waves of development in China. The work was a sound clip of a computer synthesized voice pronouncing text extracted from property adverts collected while I lived in Beijing. Listening to these thousands of words, one learned a new concept of the so-called “ideal home” in Beijing – its prices, resale values, locations, and proximity to schools and transport. How were these new ideas shaping the future of China? Perhaps it was a compulsory lesson for the young generations in the new society.
